Design a Day (14)

Driving 101 a new graphic design by Los Angeles artist Wessel

Another day, another new design. Day 14 of Design a Day continues.

For those who are just joining us for the first time, let me give a quick rundown of what Design a Day is. And, for those of you who've been here before, enjoy the pretty looking pictures of a cool design on what I like to call it Pop Color Wear. But to explain, Design a Day is about me growing as a creative, challenging myself to continually be producing, and making some cool art. I figured the best way to do that is to release one new graphic design almost every day to my store. Six days a week, something new. It's gonna be rough, but, it's gonna be fun. Hope you all enjoy the ride and find something you like along the way.

I decided to take a turn to the graphic design last night to get out a thought that I'm sure a number of people here in the US and I'm sure around the world share.

It seems like common sense when driving to use your turn signals to keep your fellow drivers aware of where you plan to move, but, as we all know, that doesn't always happen. That frustration, that anger, that near-death feeling as another car swings in and out of lanes, makes random unexpected turn, and generally makes driving a scary experience, well, hopefully this will get some people to think.

Well, probably not. Most people who don't use turn signals will never use them no matter how often their told. It's hard for people to change habits once their set, and unless you catch them when their kids behind the wheel for the first time there's probably no point. But, it still feels good to get the sentiment out.

I struggled a bit, well, a lot with this one.

I think for close to three hours, going through various combinations of colors, shapes, words, to try and keep it simple, to the point, and easy to figure out. I'm probably only 80% there, but, that's as far as I can get with my current skill level and I just gotta be happy with that for now.

Some creatives get stuck in the perfection mode, which, I guess is okay. But, it leads to a whirlpool of nothing getting out. Or, at least not getting out in any sort of timely, consistent fashion. In our modern world where you gotta always be producing and keeping peoples attention with the next, that seems like a suicidal kind of process. I mean, unless you're the next Basquiat dropping some truly amazing pieces every couple months, don't be a perfectionist. You can always come back to a concept later and redo it better. People have short memories anyways, hehe.

Anyways I had a blast putting this one together.

A couple of my friends provide some great input and direction, helping me keep on course and not get too overwhelmed by the fact that there are literally infinite ways to put this message across in a design. I'm sure I'll come back to it in time with a new vision and skills.

Until then, I hope you like how my design came out on these shirts and hoodies.

Check them out here if you wanna get one. As always, 10% discount on new merchandise with code NEWDESIGN at the checkout.

Hope y'all have a great day!
